Chiesa di San Marco

The parish church of San Marco stands at the centre of Pallare and dates from 1809 — a modest late baroque building with a campanile alongside the facade rather than integrated into it, which is typical of inland Ligurian churches of the period. The interior is simple, with plain plastered walls and an altar piece depicting the evangelist Saint Mark.

The church is the focal point of the village and is generally open during the mornings. It makes a pleasant stop on a walk through the village centre, and the small piazza in front is where locals tend to gather in the evenings during summer.

A story
The church's dedication to Saint Mark is unusual in this corner of Liguria, which was historically under Genoese influence — most villages in the area are dedicated to saints associated with Genoa or with the ancient Lombard presence in the Apennines. The 1809 construction date places San Marco in the Napoleonic era, when this part of Liguria was part of the French Empire and new church buildings were deliberately modest in scale.
