Pallare

Small Val Bormida village in wooded Ligurian hills, with churches in Pallare and Biestro.

Pallare is a small village in the upper Val Bormida, inland from the Ligurian coast in the heavily wooded hills between Savona and Piedmont. It is a quiet, rural place — forestry and a handful of gravel quarries make up most of the local economy.

The parish church of San Marco dates from 1809 and is a modest late baroque building with a campanile alongside the facade. More interesting is the Oratory of the Santissima Annunziata in the hamlet of Biestro, built in 1580, which contains frescoes and a painting attributed to the school of Guido Reni.

In the surrounding woods you can find unusual remains of old stone quarries known locally as "Napoleon's Stones." Pallare is not a destination in itself, but if you are exploring the inland valleys behind the Riviera delle Palme it makes a pleasant stop.

Things to Do

Pallare is a village to slow down in rather than tick off a list. The two churches — the parish church of San Marco and the older Oratory of the Santissima Annunziata in Biestro — are worth a look, and the wooded hills around the village have pleasant walking. The Val Bormida valley stretches south toward the coast and north into Piedmont, and Pallare sits in the middle of it, surrounded by chestnut and oak forest.
