Truffle

Liguria's unexpected truffle country in the hills above Savona

The most unexpected surprise in the province of Savona, and found nowhere else in Liguria, is the seductive truffle. A few kilometres beyond the Colle di Cadibona, in the extreme southern spur of the Langhe Cuneesi between the communes of Cairo Montenotte, Millesimo, Carcare, and Dego — and especially in the wood of Santa Giulia — you can find not only the black truffle, a close relative of those from Norcia and Périgord, but also the even more strongly scented white truffle, sometimes called the tartufo d'Alba.

Autumn is the season, when truffle hunting becomes a collective mania for both residents and visitors, alongside the gathering of mushrooms in the splendid chestnut and beech woods.
