Baia del Silenzio

The Baia del Silenzio (Bay of Silence) is the smaller and more atmospheric of Sestri Levante's two bays, curving along the northwest side of the peninsula. A crescent of calm water is backed by pastel-coloured houses, with no through traffic — only the sound of the sea. Local fishing boats are pulled up on the sand and the promenade is lined with simple bars and gelaterias.

This is the bay to linger in. The Baia delle Favole on the other side of the promontory is larger and livelier, with more beach facilities; the Baia del Silenzio stays quieter even in high summer. Come in the early morning or at dusk for the best light on the coloured facades.

A story
Hans Christian Andersen stayed in Sestri Levante in 1833 and reportedly gave the Bay of Fairy Tales (Baia delle Favole) its name, struck by its enchanting atmosphere. The Bay of Silence, the quieter of the two bays, took its name in contrast — a deliberate counterpoint to its livelier neighbour.
