Marconi Tower

The Marconi Tower at the high point of the Sestri Levante promontory is the best vantage point in town. On a clear day, the panorama extends along the Ligurian coast in both directions and out to the Alps in the north. The walk up from the old town takes about 15 minutes through increasingly quiet streets.

The tower itself is named for Guglielmo Marconi, who used this headland for radio experiments in the 1930s. There is a small monument commemorating his work on the promontory. The views alone are worth the climb — you can see both the Baia del Silenzio and the Baia delle Favole from here, laid out like a map below.

A story
Guglielmo Marconi conducted wireless transmission experiments from the tower on this headland in the 1930s, exploring how radio waves behaved over water. The promontory gave him a clear line of sight across the Gulf of Tigullio — ideal conditions for his work.
