Chiesa di San Niccolò dell'Isola

The 12th-century Chiesa di San Niccolò dell'Isola stands at the tip of Sestri Levante's peninsula, near the ruins of the old castle, in a Romanesque-Gothic style typical of Liguria. Its compact nave, simple stone facade, and position above the two bays make it the most photogenic building in town.

The church is not large, but the walk to reach it through the narrow streets of the old town is itself worthwhile. From the small terrace beside the church, you get one of the best views of both bays simultaneously — the Baia del Silenzio sweeping around to the left, the Baia delle Favole curving to the right. The Marconi Tower above is a short scramble further up the promontory.

A story
The church is sometimes called "dell'isola" (of the island) because the peninsula it sits on was once a true island, connected to the mainland only at low tide. The silting-up of the channel over medieval centuries slowly transformed it into the promontory that exists today.
