Borgio Verezzi Caves

The Borgio Verezzi Caves (Grotte di Borgio Verezzi) are a well-developed show cave system about 10 km south of Vezzi Portio, near the coastal town of Borgio Verezzi. The caves contain impressive formations — stalactites, stalagmites, helictites, and cave pearls — developed over hundreds of thousands of years in the limestone of the Ligurian Apennines.

Tours run daily in season and take about an hour, following a guided path through the main chambers. The Gran Sala, the largest chamber, is genuinely impressive in scale. The caves maintain a constant temperature of around 14°C throughout the year — a relief in summer, bracing in winter. Borgio Verezzi itself is a pleasant village with a seasonal outdoor theatre on the medieval borgo above the coast, which hosts an annual drama festival in July and August.

A story
The caves were discovered in 1933 by a local farmer digging a well. What he broke through into was a cave system that had been sealed for millennia — stalactites and stalagmites had grown undisturbed since the last Ice Age. The largest chamber, the Gran Sala, is 50 metres high.
