Vezzi Portio

Ligurian hill commune of stone hamlets above the coast between Spotorno and Finale Ligure

Vezzi Portio is a small hinterland commune in the hills between Spotorno and Finale Ligure, sitting at about 400 metres above the Ligurian coast. It consists of several hamlets — Vezzi, Portio, and Magnone — strung along the road through the upper valley of the Aquila stream. The settlement is ancient: the “Vicium” of Roman records, ceded between various feudal powers for centuries before passing to the Republic of Genoa in 1713.

The old centres at Vezzi and Portio have the compact stone architecture typical of Ligurian hill villages — narrow lanes, vaulted passages, houses stacked against the hillside. The parish church of San Salvatore at Vezzi is baroque and contains some notable interior decoration. Agricultural terraces around the village are still planted with vines and fruit trees.

The main reason to come here is for the walking. Vezzi Portio sits at the edge of the hinterland trail network that connects the ridge above Spotorno and Noli with the Finale Ligure climbing and hiking area. The Borgio Verezzi Caves are a short drive to the south and make a good pairing with a walk from the village.
