Church of San Salvatore

The parish church of San Salvatore at Vezzi is the main church of the commune, a baroque building that replaced an earlier medieval structure. The interior contains paintings and decorative elements typical of 17th-century Ligurian baroque — dark chapels, painted altarpieces, and carved woodwork that rewards a look inside.

The church stands in the small piazza that forms the centre of the Vezzi hamlet. The surrounding stone houses and narrow lanes give a good sense of what Ligurian hill villages looked like before the coast became the focus of development. The views from near the church over the Aquila valley are pleasant.

A story
The Del Carretto family, who controlled this territory until 1191, were a prominent Ligurian noble house who appear repeatedly in the medieval history of the Riviera. Their mark on these villages was a combination of castles, churches, and the feudal divisions that kept communities like Vezzi and Portio separately governed for centuries.
