Varese is under an hour from Milan by regional train. Services run frequently from Milano Cadorna (Nord line, about 50 minutes) and from Milano Porta Garibaldi via Gallarate. There are two central stations: Varese and Varese Nord, both within walking distance of the historic centre.
By car, take the A8 autostrada northwest from Milan and exit at Varese. The drive takes around 50 minutes without traffic. Parking in the centre can be tight; the lakeside areas generally have more space.
Malpensa Airport is about 30 kilometres south and makes Varese a practical first or last stop on a trip through Lombardy.
