Ponte di Solestà

Augustan Roman bridge, one of the highest single-arch Roman spans in Europe

Ascoli's second great Roman bridge, on the north-west side of the centre. A single arch carries the Via Salaria over the Tronto at a height of 22 metres — the largest surviving Roman single span in Italy. The masonry blocks are uncut and unaltered, the arch perfectly preserved.

Walk across to the Porta Romana on the north bank for the best view back. Pedestrian and very light traffic only; a short walk from the medieval centre and one of the city's best photographs.

A story
The Ponte di Solestà spans the Tronto in a single arch 22 metres above the river — among the highest single-arch Roman bridges still standing in Europe. The masonry is original; the bridge has carried traffic continuously since the reign of Augustus.
