Giovanni Bellini altarpiece and the finest collection of Pesaro majolica in Italy

The Musei Civici in Palazzo Mosca contains two collections that justify a visit on their own terms. The picture gallery on the upper floor holds Giovanni Bellini's magnificent Coronation of the Virgin altarpiece from 1474 — a rich, complex work full of landscape detail — alongside other Venetian and Marchigian paintings.

The ceramics collection downstairs is the main draw for specialists: an exceptional gathering of Pesaro majolica from the fifteenth through eighteenth centuries. The Marche region was one of the great centres of Italian tin-glazed earthenware, and Pesaro itself was renowned for its distinctive decorative style. The pieces range from functional household ceramics to elaborate commemorative platters painted with mythological scenes and portraits. If you have any interest in Italian Renaissance applied arts, this is a world-class collection that receives a fraction of the attention it deserves.

A story
The Bellini Coronation of the Virgin (1474) was commissioned for the church of San Francesco and stayed in Pesaro for 350 years before being moved here for safekeeping. Napoleon's troops took many of Pesaro's artworks to Paris; this one survived because the French general reportedly couldn't figure out how to remove it from its frame without damaging it. It has been in the museum ever since.
