Monte Mottarone

Summit at 1,491m with panoramic views over Lake Maggiore and the Alps

The summit of Monte Mottarone, at 1,491 metres, offers one of the most spectacular panoramas in the Italian lake district. From the top you can see across multiple lakes to the snow-capped Alps, and on clear days as far as the Monte Rosa massif on the Swiss border.

The mountain is accessible by road (the toll road from Stresa or Armeno) or on foot via marked trails from the town. Note that the cable car from Stresa was involved in a fatal accident in 2021 and remained closed for reconstruction; check current status before planning around it. The summit area has a small ski resort active in winter, though the skiing is modest by alpine standards. The Giardino Alpinia botanical garden sits partway up the mountain and makes a good stopping point on the way.

A story
On a clear day from the summit of Monte Mottarone you can see seven lakes — Maggiore, Orta, Varese, Comabbio, Monate, Mergozzo, and Biandronno — as well as the full arc of the Alps from the Monte Rosa massif to the Dolomites. Hemingway set scenes of A Farewell to Arms on the slopes of this mountain.
