Lungomare Nazario Sauro

Long seafront promenade from the old port to the Teatro Margherita

The Lungomare Nazario Sauro is Bari's principal seafront walk, one of the longest in Italy, stretching for about a kilometre from the old harbour to the Teatro Margherita at the far end. The promenade is wide, tree-lined, and flanked on the sea side by a low wall with views across the Adriatic. On the landward side, Liberty-style buildings from the early 20th century house cafes, gelaterias, and the Pinacoteca Metropolitana, the largest regional art gallery in southern Italy.

The lungomare is busiest in the evenings, when the city does its passeggiata along the seafront, and on summer weekends when the whole town comes out. From the promenade you can see across to the ferry port — Bari is the main gateway to Albania, Montenegro, and Greece — and the fishermen selling fresh catch from buckets on the quayside are a daily sight.
