Chiesa Madre di Sant'Anna

Toritto's eighteenth-century parish church on the old town's main square

The parish church of Sant'Anna sits at the centre of the old town, a sober white-stone facade looking onto the small piazza that doubles as Toritto's living room. The current building dates to the eighteenth century, replacing an earlier mediaeval church on the same spot, and its single nave holds a handful of baroque altars and a wooden statue of Saint Anne carried in procession during the July feast.

The square outside is where Toritto gathers for the evening passeggiata. Pull up a chair at the bar on the corner, order an espresso or a glass of local Primitivo, and watch the town go by. On feast days the piazza fills with stalls selling almond pastries, sugared confetti, and grilled bombette.
