Murgia countryside

Almond groves, olive trees, trulli and old farmhouses on the hills above Toritto

The land around Toritto is classic high Murgia — a limestone plateau rolling gently south from the coast, scattered with drystone walls, almond and olive trees, and the occasional trullo or masseria. The country roads make for an easy half-day cycle or drive, with little traffic and plenty of places to stop.

Head west toward Grumo Appula and Binetto and you pass a string of old fortified farms, several still working as olive presses or holiday farmstays. In spring the wildflowers are remarkable: orchids, poppies, and the white drift of almond blossom. Pack water and sunscreen; there are no cafes once you leave the towns.
