Lake Baratz

Lake Baratz, about 2 km east of Porto Ferro, is the only natural freshwater lake in Sardinia. Surrounded by cork oak forest and Mediterranean scrubland, it is a quiet place to walk after the beach — the path around the lake takes about an hour and passes through a landscape quite different from the coastal dunes.

The lake is a protected wetland and a good spot for birdwatching, particularly during migration periods in spring and autumn. Flamingos sometimes feed here. The surrounding cork oaks show the distinctive ochre-red trunks of recently harvested trees — cork harvesting is still practised in this part of Sardinia.
