Castelbuono is the most convenient and rewarding village on the northern side of the Madonie. It has a proper town centre, a castle, pastry shops, and enough life to make it more than a pretty stop on the way into the hills.
The Ventimiglia castle gives the town its historic weight, but the best reason to linger is the ordinary rhythm of the place: people shopping, cafés filling in the evening, and mountain air slipping down the lanes after sunset. It works well as a base if you want the Madonie without feeling isolated.
