Pizzo Carbonara

Pizzo Carbonara is the high point of the Madonie and the obvious goal for walkers who want the big view. The summit sits in a bare limestone landscape above the beech woods, with the sea visible on clear days and the interior of Sicily folding away to the south.

The walk is not technically difficult in good weather, but it is still a mountain. Start early, carry water, and do not underestimate fog or wind. The best approaches usually begin around Piano Battaglia, where the road already does much of the climbing.

A story
Pizzo Carbonara is often described as Sicily's second-highest mountain after Etna, but the contrast is the point: no smoking crater, no cable car crowds, just pale limestone, wind, and a surprisingly northern feeling in the middle of the Mediterranean.
