Piazza Walther is the heart of the old town, a broad square named for Walther von der Vogelweide, the 12th-century German poet whose statue stands at its centre. The square is pleasant to sit in, with outdoor tables from several cafés and the Gothic cathedral on one side. In December, it hosts one of the most atmospheric Christmas markets in the Alps — wooden stalls, mulled wine, and the Duomo lit against the winter sky.
The square connects to Via dei Portici, the main arcade street of the old town, which runs north through a series of medieval arches. The whole area is traffic-free and easy to walk.
