The Renon (Ritten in German) plateau rises above Bolzano's eastern valley wall, accessed by a modern cable car from the city centre and then a narrow-gauge mountain railway across the plateau. The views from the plateau over the city below and the Dolomites behind are superb; on a clear day the profile of the Rosengarten massif and the Schlern is visible.
The plateau has a network of hiking trails, and the village of Collalbo (Klobenstein) at its centre has restaurants and guesthouses. The Earth Pyramids near the village of Lengstein — tall pinnacles of glacial sediment capped with large stones that protect them from erosion — are a geological oddity worth a short detour. The whole excursion takes a half day from Bolzano.
