Fonte della Fata Morgana

Tucked into the hillside at Grassina, the Fonte della Fata Morgana is one of the most charming oddities in the Florentine countryside. A small neogothic pavilion frames a natural spring, its pointed arches and decorative stonework giving it the appearance of a miniature fairy-tale structure. The architecture is pure fantasy — a folly built more for whimsy than function on what was once a private estate.

The spring itself has been used for centuries, and local tradition holds that the waters have beneficial properties. The name Fata Morgana — the mythical sorceress of Arthurian legend, known for creating mirages — speaks to the dreamlike quality of the place: a tiny gothic fantasy hidden among the ordinary Tuscan hills. It's not listed in most guidebooks, which is much of its appeal.

A story
Built in the 18th century as a garden folly on a private estate, the Fonte della Fata Morgana is a tiny gothic-revival pavilion around a spring at Grassina. Locals have long called it the Casina delle Fate — the Little Fairy House — because of its fanciful arched design. It sits in a quiet corner of the Bagno a Ripoli countryside, almost hidden among vegetation.
