Bagno a Ripoli

Florentine hillside municipality of olive groves, Chianti vineyards, and villages just beyond the Arno.

Bagno a Ripoli is a quiet municipality on the southeastern edge of Florence, spread across gentle hills covered in olive groves and vineyards. It sits along the right bank of the Arno, just five kilometres from the city centre, making it an easy escape from the crowds.

The area has deep medieval roots. It was once the centre of one of the Florentine countryside's historic Leagues — associations of parishes that served as both ecclesiastical and civil districts. The League of Bagno a Ripoli encompassed dozens of parishes, including Santa Maria at Antella and San Donnino at Villamagna, and the old parish of Antella once sat on the important road linking Florence with Arezzo and Rome.

Today the municipality is a patchwork of small villages — Antella, Grassina, Ponte a Niccheri — set among terraced hillsides where Chianti DOCG and extra-virgin olive oil are still produced on small family farms. The landscape is classic Florentine countryside, with Renaissance villas, Romanesque churches, and cypress-lined lanes.

Getting Around

The municipality is spread across several villages, so you will want some form of transport beyond walking. ATAF bus lines connect the main settlements: line 31 serves Grassina, line 32 goes to Antella, line 33 runs to Bagno a Ripoli centre and La Fonte, and line 48 circulates entirely within the municipality.

Having a car makes exploring the surrounding hills and countryside much easier, particularly if you want to visit the smaller villages and farms off the main bus routes.

Things to Do

Bagno a Ripoli rewards visitors who want to experience the Florentine countryside without the city crowds. The gentle hills southeast of Florence are dotted with medieval churches, Renaissance villas, and small villages where life moves at a slower pace. Walking or cycling between Antella and Grassina through terraced olive groves is as good an introduction as any.

The municipality is better visited as a half-day excursion from Florence or as a base for exploring the surrounding countryside than as a standalone destination. The appeal is atmospheric rather than monumental.
