Santi Jacopo e Filippo

The church of Santi Jacopo e Filippo, in the heart of Certaldo Alto, holds the tomb of Giovanni Boccaccio. The building dates to the 13th century, though it has been modified and restored at various points since. It is a working church rather than a museum, which gives it a different atmosphere from the Palazzo Pretorio and Casa Boccaccio nearby.

Boccaccio died in Certaldo in December 1375 and was buried here. What you see today is largely a cenotaph — a commemorative monument — erected in his honour, since the original burial and its markers went through various upheavals over the centuries. An inscription drawn from his own writing accompanies the tomb. It is a quieter stop than the palazzo or the house, worth a few minutes for anyone interested in Boccaccio, and the church interior itself is handsome enough to merit a look regardless.
