The Convent of San Domenico sits halfway down the hill between Fiesole and Florence, about a kilometre below Piazza Mino on the road toward the city. The Dominican community was established here in 1406, and the young Guido di Pietro — later known as Fra Angelico — entered the order here around 1420 and spent years at San Domenico before moving to the convent of San Marco in Florence. The connection is the main reason to come.
In the church you can see Fra Angelico's Madonna and Saints altarpiece, though the main panel was moved to the Uffizi and replaced by a copy; the lunette above the altar is still original. The chapter house retains a damaged fresco of the Crucifixion attributed to Fra Angelico. The convent itself is a working religious community; the public rooms are open to visitors. It's an easy walk down from Fiesole or a stop on the way back to Florence on foot — the road follows the old contado path through dense cypress and olive.
