Trattoria Cammillo has been serving traditional Florentine food on the south bank of the Arno since 1945. It occupies a series of rooms in a building on Borgo San Jacopo, the main street running along the Oltrarno side of the river between Ponte Vecchio and Ponte alla Carraia. The clientele is a mixture of neighbourhood regulars, Florentine professionals, and visitors who have done their homework.
The cooking is solidly Florentine: ribollita with good olive oil, pappardelle al cinghiale (with wild boar), bistecca alla Fiorentina of proper weight and quality, roast meats, and seasonal vegetables. The wine list is focused on Tuscany and reasonably priced. The rooms are straightforward — white walls, wooden furniture, no design pretensions — and the service is attentive without performance. Booking is advisable at dinner; lunch is usually less pressured. Cammillo is one of those reliable, unfashionable trattorias that Florence still has a few of, where the food is consistently well-executed and the atmosphere is genuinely local.
