Opening Hours Mon–Sat 08:00–19:30; Sun 08:30–19:30

An 11th-century Romanesque basilica above Piazzale Michelangelo, often missed by visitors who stop at the terrace below. The green-and-white marble facade, geometric inlaid floors, and golden mosaic apse are among the finest medieval interiors in Tuscany. The resident Benedictine monks sing Gregorian vespers daily at around 17:30 — attending is free and one of the most unexpectedly moving experiences the city offers.

Walk up from Piazzale Michelangelo (5 minutes) or take bus 13 from the centre. The cemetery alongside the basilica, where Carlo Collodi (creator of Pinocchio) is buried, is also worth a look.
