Castello di Meleto

Castello di Meleto is a well-preserved medieval fortress about 3 km south of Gaiole, one of the more complete examples of the fortified farmhouse complexes that gave Chianti its distinctive landscape. The castle dates from the 10th century and was built to defend the road between Florence and Siena — a strategically critical corridor that both cities fought over for much of the Middle Ages. The cylindrical towers at each corner are characteristic of Florentine military architecture of the period.

The castle is now a working winery and offers guided tours that include the wine cellars, the historic rooms, and a small private theatre on the top floor — a 17th-century addition that is one of the more unexpected features of any Chianti castle. Wine tastings follow the tour. The estate produces Chianti Classico and several other Tuscan wines. The surrounding vineyards and the view back toward Gaiole make this one of the more photogenic spots on the castle route.
