Pieve di Spaltenna

The Pieve di Santa Maria a Spaltenna is a Romanesque parish church on a hill just above Gaiole, incorporated into a medieval fortified complex that also includes a tower and cloister. The church dates from the 11th and 12th centuries and is built in the characteristic local style — rough-hewn pietra serena stone, a simple apse, and a bell tower that doubles as a watchtower. From the terrace in front of the church, the view across the Chianti hills is one of the best available without a long drive.

The complex now also houses a small hotel and restaurant, but the church itself remains a working parish and is freely accessible. The interior preserves traces of medieval frescoes and a carved stone baptismal font. It is a 10-minute walk up from the centre of Gaiole and a natural starting point for the walk or drive along the "Chianti castles route" that the comune has mapped through the surrounding hills.
