The slopes of Monte Capanne — at 1,019 metres the highest point on Elba — rise directly behind Marina di Campo. Several marked trails climb through chestnut and oak forest to the granite summit, where the views extend to Corsica, Sardinia, and the Tuscan coast on a clear day. The most popular route from the south coast starts near Poggio, a short drive from Marina di Campo; from there, a well-marked path climbs about 600 metres in roughly two hours. Alternatively, there is a small cable car (cabinovia) from Marciana village that covers most of the height gain — not very fast, but the open-cage gondolas are memorable. Take water, good footwear, and an early start in summer.
