Cathedral of Saints Peter and Francis

Massa's cathedral stands in the lower town, a short walk from Piazza Aranci. The current building dates mostly from the seventeenth century, when the Cybo-Malaspina dukes rebuilt an older church in a Baroque idiom, though the foundations are considerably earlier. The facade is relatively restrained by the standards of the period; the interior opens into a spacious single nave with side chapels containing paintings and sculptures commissioned by the ducal family over several generations.

The most interesting part of the cathedral is the crypt beneath the main altar, which preserves the tombs of the Cybo-Malaspina dukes — an unusually intact dynastic burial ensemble for a town of Massa's size. The marble used throughout the building, from the floor slabs to the altar surrounds, was quarried in the nearby Apuan Alps, giving the interior a luminous quality and a direct material connection to the landscape that defines the whole province.
