Pope Pius II — Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini — was one of the few medieval pontiffs who wrote a full memoir, and his Commentaries are an extraordinary first-person account of fifteenth-century Italy by a man who knew everyone and travelled everywhere. The book is the best preparation for a visit to Pienza, since the pope describes in detail his decision to rebuild his hometown and his pride in the result.
