Mugello Circuit

One of the finest racing circuits in the world, the Mugello Circuit winds through the forested hills about 12 kilometres from San Piero a Sieve. The Italian MotoGP round is held here each June and draws enormous crowds — the campsite areas fill days before the race and the sound of engines carries across the valley. The circuit also hosts Formula 1 test sessions and various other motorsport events throughout the year.

On race weekends the whole Mugello valley transforms: traffic builds from Scarperia to the entrance, campsites and terraces open up along the hillsides, and the atmosphere in the surrounding villages shifts noticeably. On non-race days the circuit sometimes opens for track days and driving experiences; check the published calendar if you are visiting in summer and want to get on the track.

The drive from San Piero a Sieve to the circuit along the SP551 through Scarperia is scenic and worth doing in its own right. Scarperia itself has a handsome central square and is known for its tradition of knife-making — a short detour before or after the circuit is easy to arrange.

A story
The circuit's undulating layout through the Tuscan hills makes it one of the most technically demanding on the MotoGP calendar. Valentino Rossi — who grew up 130 kilometres north in Tavullia — treated Mugello as his home race for his entire career, and his victories here were among the most celebrated in Italian motorsport history.
