Rifugio Duca degli Abruzzi

Historic mountain refuge on the Italian approach to the Matterhorn

The Rifugio Duca degli Abruzzi sits at 2,802 metres above Cervinia, on the approach route to the Italian side of the Matterhorn. It is named after Prince Luigi Amedeo of Savoy, Duke of the Abruzzi — one of the great mountaineering explorers of the late 19th century, who climbed in the Alps before going on to expeditions in Alaska and the Karakoram.

The refuge is a popular destination for a half-day walk from Cervinia. The path climbs steadily through alpine meadows with continuous views of the south face of the Matterhorn — about two and a half hours up, less coming back. Lunch on the terrace is one of the small classic experiences of the area. Serious climbers continue from here towards the Lion Ridge.
