Lake Goillet

High mountain reservoir above Cervinia at 2,524 m

Lake Goillet is a large artificial reservoir on the slopes above Cervinia, built in 1949 to feed hydroelectric stations down in the Aosta Valley. It sits at 2,524 metres, reached either by chairlift in summer or by a steady walk of about two hours from the village.

The setting is austere — bare rock and high alpine meadow, no trees — but the views back to the Matterhorn are excellent, and the lakeshore is a popular picnic spot in summer. A footpath circles the lake, and several easy walks branch off into the surrounding cirque. The water is too cold to swim in, even at the height of summer.
