The Plateau Rosa is a wide glacier saddle at 3,480 metres, reached by a sequence of three lifts from the centre of Cervinia. It is the high point of the lift system and the link to the Zermatt ski area on the Swiss side. In summer the snow holds well enough for limited skiing on the Theodul Glacier — one of the very few Alpine sites where this is still possible.
Even non-skiers can take the lift up for the view, which is among the most spectacular in the Alps: Monte Rosa to the east, the Matterhorn just to the north, and a sea of 4,000-metre peaks stretching in every direction. There's a restaurant at the top station. Take warm clothing regardless of the temperature in the village below — there is often a 20-degree difference.
