Thermal Spa Complex

Roman thermal springs still flowing at 87°C today

The thermal pools at Montegrotto are fed by springs that rise at around 87°C, rich in bromine and iodine. The main spa hotels — including Terme Preistoriche and Hotel Augustus Terme — sell day passes to their outdoor and indoor pools. The outdoor pools are the most enjoyable: warm water even on cool days, with views of the Euganean Hills.

The Romans built elaborate bath complexes here in the first and second centuries AD. Excavations beneath the modern town have uncovered mosaic floors, hypocaust heating systems, and quantities of small bronze votive figures left by bathers seeking cures. Some of this material is in the Museo Nazionale Atestino in nearby Este.
