Cattedrale di San Pietro Apostolo

Treviso's cathedral has stood on this spot since the Romanesque era but was rebuilt across centuries; the current facade is 19th-century neoclassical and not the building's strongest feature. The interior is the reason to visit. Seven domes cover the nave, and the Cappella Malchiostro on the right contains Titian's Annunciation alongside frescoes by Pordenone — a rare juxtaposition of the two rivals on the same wall.

The crypt below is older than anything visible above ground, with a forest of squat columns of varied marble salvaged from earlier Roman and early-medieval buildings on the site.

A story
Behind the cathedral's neoclassical facade hides Titian's Annunciation of 1520, painted for the canon Broccardo Malchiostro. Look carefully at the column behind the Virgin — Titian signed his name there in tiny script, in the act of stepping forward out of the painting.
