Jelgava Palace is the city's headline sight: a long, sober baroque palace designed by Bartolomeo Rastrelli, better known for imperial work in Saint Petersburg. It stands on Pils Island between branches of the Lielupe, which gives the building the space it needs.
The palace now belongs to the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, so it is not a fully open museum in the way Rundale is. Even so, the exterior, riverside setting, and Courland ducal tombs make it worth the trip from Riga.
