Limbaži Castle Ruins and Observation Tower

Ruins of a medieval archbishop's castle, with a tower overlooking the old town.

The Limbaži castle ruins are among the older medieval fortification remains in Latvia. The castle belonged to the Archbishops of Riga and once gave the town its political weight; today the remaining walls and tower are modest but atmospheric.

Climb the observation tower for the best sense of the town's layout. The site is most worthwhile when paired with the museum next door, since the ruins alone are a short visit.
