Valmiera Castle Ruins are the visible remains of the town's medieval fortress, built by the Order of the Sword Brothers. The walls are fragmentary rather than grand, but they explain why the old centre sits where it does.
Visit them together with St Simon's Church and the museum. The ruins work best as part of a walk through the historic core, with the Gauja River close by and the town's later layers built around the same defensive site.
