Valmiera Drama Theatre is the only professional theatre in Vidzeme and one of the reasons the town feels more active than a simple provincial stop. It was founded in 1919 and remains a major cultural institution for northern Latvia.
Most performances are in Latvian, so this is not always an easy evening for visitors. Still, it is worth checking the programme if you are staying overnight, and the building helps define the compact centre around the church and castle.
