Valmiera Museum sits beside the castle ruins and is the best place to make sense of the town's long Vidzeme history. Its exhibitions cover the settlement, the castle, local crafts, and the region around the Gauja.
It is not a blockbuster museum, but it is useful and well placed. See it after walking the ruins, when the fragments outside need some context.
