Nemunas River Region

Lower Nemunas river region of castle mounds, forested valleys, and slow roads toward the Baltic

The Nemunas River Region covers the lower reaches of Lithuania's longest river as it curves through low hills, castle mounds, and forested valleys toward the Baltic. This is a quiet part of the country, far from Vilnius and Kaunas, and rewards travelers who are willing to take the slower roads. The landscape is dotted with medieval castle ruins perched on river bends — Raudondvaris, Raudone, and Panemune castles all look down on the Nemunas from commanding positions on the banks.

The western end of the region connects to the Curonian Spit, the extraordinary UNESCO-listed sand peninsula that stretches from the Lithuanian coast toward Kaliningrad. The town of Nida at the southern end of the spit is the most beautiful settlement on the Baltic coast, with enormous dunes, a lagoon, and a surviving tradition of painted wooden fishermen's cottages. Getting to Nida requires taking the ferry from Klaipėda and either driving or cycling the length of the spit.

The river itself is popular for canoe trips in summer. The Nemunas Delta, where the river spreads into a network of channels and islands before reaching the lagoon, is a protected reserve and one of the best birdwatching areas in Lithuania. The market town of Šilutė serves as the practical base for exploring the delta region. The area sees few foreign tourists but is well regarded by Lithuanians for weekend trips — the castle sites, cycling routes along the river, and the amber-scattered beaches of the Curonian Spit all reward the journey.
