Sts. Cosmas and Damian Parish Church

Two-towered parish church in the centre of the town

The parish church of Sts. Cosmas and Damian sits in the centre of the lower town, distinguished by its twin slate-roofed towers. The current building dates from 1910-1911, replacing an older medieval church that was demolished to make way; the architect Pierre Funck-Eydt designed it in a neo-Romanesque style to harmonise with the abbey on the hill above.

Inside, a quiet single-aisle nave with painted stations of the cross and a 1920s organ. The carved stone font is older — late medieval — and was preserved from the demolished earlier church. The patron saints, the twin physician-martyrs Cosmas and Damian, give the church its dedication and appear in the apse painting.

Open during the day. The church plaza, with its small fountain and benches, is the main public space of the town's lower centre.
