M4 Sherman Tank Memorial

Knocked-out American tank from the Battle of the Bulge

In the small square just below the castle stands a US Army M4 Sherman tank, hulk-still on its tracks — a permanent memorial to the men of the 110th Infantry Regiment who held Clervaux against the German offensive in December 1944. The tank itself was not knocked out at Clervaux (the original armor losses on the spot were brought back to the United States as scrap after the war) but is an authentic Sherman from the period, donated by the US Army and emplaced here in 1947.

A small plaque in English, French, and Luxembourgish records the action: from 16 to 18 December 1944 a US tactical force of about 600 men held the town against the entire 2nd Panzer Division before being overwhelmed. Most were killed or captured. The tank stands as the public face of the larger Battle of the Bulge story told inside the castle museum.

A free, open-air memorial — visit it on the way up the cobbled lane to the castle entrance.
