Urspelt Castle

Renovated 14th-century castle, now a hotel, north of Clervaux

Three kilometres north of Clervaux, the Château d'Urspelt sits in the small village of the same name. The 14th-century stone-and-slate structure was carefully restored between 2003 and 2009 by a private owner and reopened as a luxury hotel and restaurant. It is one of the better-preserved minor castles of the Luxembourg Oesling, and an example of what a sensitive private restoration can accomplish.

The interior is mostly given over to the hotel, but the grounds and the chapel are open to visitors. The Saint-Bonifate chapel inside the castle complex dates from the 16th century and contains period frescoes uncovered during the restoration. The terraced gardens are pleasant in summer.

The restaurant is highly regarded; even non-guests can drop in for lunch or dinner with a reservation. A pleasant 30-minute walk from Clervaux leads here through the valley.
