Vianden Castle

Vianden Castle is one of the most impressive fortified residences in western Europe, perched on a rocky promontory above the town and the Our valley. Construction began in the 11th century on Roman foundations and continued through the 14th century, producing a complex of Romanesque and Gothic buildings around a central great hall.

The castle is fully restored and the interior is open to visitors year-round, with furnished rooms, a Romanesque chapel, and a Gothic great hall that gives a good sense of medieval palatial architecture. The views from the ramparts over the Our valley and the wooded hills of the Ardennes are excellent. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for a proper visit.

A story
Vianden Castle fell into ruin over the 18th and 19th centuries after the Orange-Nassau family sold off its fittings. The Dutch royal family eventually donated the ruin to the Luxembourg state in 1977. The subsequent restoration took decades and transformed the castle from a roofless shell into the furnished interior it has today.
