The Sant'Anna Bastion is the great curved limestone wall that closes off the landward end of the Senglea peninsula, part of the 16th-century fortifications planned by the Knights' military engineers. The single gate at the top has been the only land entrance to the town for nearly 500 years.
The walk along the top of the bastion gives a fine view over the dockyard, the surrounding Three Cities, and the heights of Birgu opposite. Inscriptions and shields above the gate record the names of the Grand Masters who built and rebuilt the walls.
