Il-Macina

The Macina is the curious wedge-shaped fortified building on the waterfront below the Senglea bastions, originally a 16th-century crane (macina) for lifting masts and rigging onto warships in the Galley Harbour below. It was the largest piece of dockyard machinery in the Mediterranean for centuries.

It has been beautifully restored as a hotel in recent years, but the public can still walk around the outside and admire the massive limestone arches and the stepped lower gardens that descend to the water. The view from the quay below back towards Birgu and Fort St Angelo is excellent.
